Protesters came to Downing St to show solidarity with England footballers Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after the storm of racist abuse after the Euro2020 final penalty shootout. Swanscombe Walk

Swanscombe, Kent. 10th July 2021

more pictures

Swanscombe on the River Thames between Dartford and Gravesend was one of the centres of the North Kent cement industry with the village poised on the top of huge chalk quarries. The industry here went around 50 years ago, and parts of the quarries now have other industrial sites, but much has reverted to nature, though a massive concrete jetty and some nearby structures remain. The Swanscombe peninsula juts out into the river and has areas of freshwater and salt marsh and parts have now been given SSSI status.

Plans were put forward around ten years ago to convert around half this land into a theme park, but these met with determined opposition from many who appreciate the area as a green space, one of the first large stretches of riverside east of London not already lined with luxury flats. The proposed development would include hotels and transport infrastructure which would destroy the current nature of the area though some welcome the jobs it would bring to a relatively deprived area.

I first photographed the area in the 1980s, when there were considerably more signs of the former industry, and returned later both to enjoy the peace and quiet and then to photograph when the Channel Tunnel Rail link came into the area before diving into a tunnel under the Thames. It has long been a crossing point of the river, one of the routes for pilgrims to and from Canterbury, as well as more recently for high voltage wires carried between two enormous pylons. A few years ago, the photography group Crossing Lines, based around Goldsmiths, organised a project and exhibition on the area, and this trip was made with others from the group as they contemplated new work in the area.
