Hospital
A security officer asks that the protesters go behind the barriers
in front of the entrance
and they move behind them
The out-sourced workers now almost all belong to the United Voices
of the World union and there is an almost
full turnout for the strike rally.
their banner calls for justice and another urges people not to cross
the picket line
Petros Elia puts up another banner and lays another on the groun in
front of the barriers
There is loud music and people add to it, with this woman with a tambourine
others shout and shake instruments.
Cleaners, porters and caterers are united in calling for equality
with directly employed workers at similar levels
People join in banging a drum
and a patient comes out in a wheelchair to join the protesters
Air horns add to the noise
and the man in the wheelchair whistles
A protester speaks on a powerful megaphone
but others manage to make a great deal of noise without amplification
'Strike for equality', 'Equality for Outsourced Workers', 'No More
Poverty Wages' - the demands are clear
Low paid workers have long been neglected - as the UVW t-shirt says
they are 'No Longer Invisibles' thanks to
the work of grass roots unions including the UVW.
