St Mary's Hospital Strike For Equality
Paddington, London. Mon 28 Oct 2019
Every worker has a right to 'Dignity and Respect' and to a living
wage
People collect money for the strike fund. The UVW is a grass roots
union which works on a shoe-string
'Silent No More' the UVW lets low paid workers be heard - and this
noisy protest cannot be ignored
This was the first day of a 15 day strike, starting with 3 days this
week. And if that doesn't bring a satisfactory
settlement, the struggle will continue.
Led by Petros Elia the strikers begin a conga line around the barriers
'SODEXO No More Poevert Wages - Enough!'
'Don't panic - ORGANISE!'
This is a struggle led by the workers, supported by their union, the
UVW
and the workers are determined to win. Many of the members of the
public and NHS staff going into and out from
the hospital expressed support while I was there, though some found
the protest irritating. But it is only through
protests like this that the outsourcing companies and hospital management
are forced to talk with the UVW.
SODEXO employ the workers, but they are workers at St Mary's Hospital
and deserve the same terms and
conditions of service as they would have if they were employed directly
by the hospital. And the hospital
management are responsible for the terms of the contracts that they
make with companies like SODEXO, and
can put pressure on SODEXO to treat the workers properly.
They too should be saying 'SODEXO - No More Poverty Wages - Enough!'
and supporting the staff who play a vital role in the services the
hospital provides.
