The narrow street beside the railway bridge leads to a footpath which
goes to Stanwell Moor
The path goes over the Aqueduct taking water from the River Thames
to Staines Reservoirs
in the distance is a waterworks building beside Staines bypass
The River Colne
The River Colne runs under the Staines bypass and in the bottom right
corner is the sluice for the River Ash
The path continues along the east side of Staines Moor, an overgrown
area between Bonehead Ditch and
Staines West Reservoir.
Shortly before reaching Stanwell Moor a footpath leads south-west
towards the centre of Staines Moor
with a boardwalk across ground that is sometimes boggy. Linda takes
a rest
The boardwalk is close to the River Colne which often floods here
and a bridge goes across Bonehead Ditch, a smaller stream of the Colne.
The River Colne seems quite narrow here, but there is a wide area
of reeds on the opposite bank
Bonehead Ditch is almost hidden by trees here. It runs along the east
side of the moor to rejoin the Colne
River Colne
Ant hills on Staines Moor, land continuously grazed probably for a
thousand years or more and a SSSI
It seems a minor river but often floods over large areas of Staines
Moor
There are at least two bridges over the river on the moor. We keep
on the east bank and cut off some
of the corners as the river winds south.
The path is a little raised and usually keeps above water even when
much of the moor is flooded
