Police and UPHD members direct drivers to the protest and divert others
Sadiq Khan as Mayour of London has decided private hire drivers should
pay the congesion charge while black cabs remain exempted
The drivers park on London Bridge
Some with flags and banners
A man tapes a picture of Sadiq Khan to his car
with the message that he is the worst London Mayor ever. Doesn't he
remember Boris the Disaster?
Protesters get out drums
and caryy IWGB flags
The UPHD, set up by the IWGB, unites various groups of minicab drivers
including the British Bangladesh Mincab Drivers Association
and is the UK's largest Trade Union for Private HIre Drivers
'Sadiq Driving Us Into Poverty'
'TFL driving us into Poverty'
The drivers gather in the middle of the bridge for a rally
SAPHD Somali All Private Hire Drivers also is a part of the UPHD
The drivers say they are being discriminated against - and have warned
TfL that they will take them to court
and they appear to have a good case. 94% of minicab drivers are from
London's black and minority ethnic communities
while it is hard to find a single Licensed Taxi driver who is not
white British - just a few.
The whole taxi system goes back to the days of the Hansom cab, and
is clearly in need of rethinking in the
age of the smartphone and the sat-nav. Cabs without passengers driving
around to find passengers is clearly
a major and unnecessary cause of congestion and pollution on London's
streets and should be ended forthwith.
The drivers march down the bridge behind drums
and stop for some chanting
and then turn and march back towards the CIty.
They stop just before the road junction for some speeches and more
chanting. then turn around and walk back
towards the centre of the bridge where there is a longer rally
with some speeches,
UPHD co-Founder and General Secretary James Farrar addresses the rally
