Shut Down Yarl's Wood 14

Yarl's Wood immigration prison, Bedford. Sat 21 Jul 2018

The track turns round at the end of the next field, and we can already hear some of the women in the prison shouting a welcome.

People cross another ditch to go into the final field,

which leads to a gate into the field beside the detention centre

The field rises from the 20 foot fence, and from it we can see the windows where some of the women inside

have gathered. The guards inside try to keep the women away from these windows, locking doors and putting

on alternative events such as fashion shows on the other side of the prison. Today it was very hot, and because

the windows open only a very narrow slit, even hotter inside Yarls Wood. The guards were offering free ice creams

to entice the women away from the windows facing the protesters. But there wre still people there, waving back

at the protesters on the hill facing them.

 Some waved items of clothing

and others put up notices calling for help, and for Yarl's Wood to be closed down

 'They giving us pigs food'

Kicking the fence makes a good noise for when people are not speaking

and there was a lot of noisy chanting from outside the immigration jail.

I climbed briefly to the top of a ladder the protesters had brought and took a few photographs with my camera

lens against the wire. My lenses are all too large to poke through the fence

Standing well back up the hill gives a clear viw of the first floor windows
