Massive Silent Walk for Grenfell Anniversary

Notting Hill, London. Thu 14 Jun 2018

People fill a large area under the Westway and along the road as they wait to march

One of the Grenfell community association leaders sees me taking her picture

and a friend poses with her

The covered Grenfell Tower above the Grenfell heart calling for JUSTICE

and behind another heart calling for PEACE

People wait for the march to start

A woman has some fine face paint

The march starts as I am walking past the Methodist Church

Among the marchers are many people I have photographed before - including this Grenfell nursery worker and her mother

and Notting Hill community organiser Niles Hailstones carrying a yellow heart with the message 'PHOENIX'

People wait on the steps of the Methodist Church as I try to get out of the way

The march pauses briefly on Lancaster Rd - with Grenfell Tower still visible behind it

The sides of the street are densely packed with people, most of whom will join the march later

Stewards keep people away from the front of the march

Some carry photographs of those who died

Firefighters line both sides of Ladbroke Grove in respect

 The march approaches

People stop to shake hands and thank the fire-fighters. Some embrace them.

While some papers and middle-class commentators try to shift blame onto the firefighters, the community has

no doubt that they are heroes who did far more than could be expected, some going back five times into the

burning building. They didn't clad it with highly combustible material, ignore obvious safety issues pointed out
by residents, engage 'experts' to avoid proper fire inspections....
