Veterans For Peace had come to the arms fair to set up a check point
for illegal arms
and started with a thorough briefing
before walking through the peace camp to the road
where they set up their military operation
They stop their first lorry, but police rush out to try and clear
them out of the way
Ben Griffin argues with police, telilng them they should be stopping
and searching lorries for illegal arms
and saying that Veterans For Peace were happy to do the job for them
if they were not going to
but although the police stood as he read a statement, they were not
really listening
and were certainly not prepared to engage with the claim of illegal
arms coming to the fair, although it had been
found that this had happened at the previous arms fair two years ago.
The police refused to take any action against illegal arms - and were
only concerned with keeping the road clear
to allow the arms to come in - illegal or not. Veterans for Peace
try to continue with their Banned Weapons checkpoint
Two advance parties waved the lorries down as the came along the road
Knitting with missiles
Ben Griffin gets a knitting lesson
and then rushes over to stop a van, but police move him away as he
tries to talk to the driver
and tell him he must stay on the pavement
And Ben tries to stop another lorry
