Newham Mag is published fortnightly and delivered at council tax payers
expense to every address in Newham
Focus E15's 'thenewhamnag' looks rather similar and so some people
were reluctant to take a copy
The protesters had to keep telling people that it wasn't from the
council and was worth reading
unlike the official publication
Police tried to talk to Focus E15 and get them to go away
but they continued to speak about housing issues and the failures
of Newham Council
Newham has the HIGHEST number of residents in temporary accomodation
of any London Borough
and has kept good homes on the Carpenters Estate empty for over ten
years
while shipping its homeless out to private rented accomodation in
distant towns and cities
Many Newham councillors are private landlords - the poster says 46
own or control 100 properties
There are only 59 councillors at the moment, so that's around 78%
are landlords.... 58 of the 59 are Labour (and the 59th ex-Labour)
Newham took out disastrous LOBO loans - £248.5 million - a “one-way”
bet in favour of the banks and consultants
and despite managing to negotiate some respite is still paying out
huge amounts on them.
