IWGB Cleaners protest for Living Wage

Southwark Crown Court, London. Fri 2 Oct 2015

Protesters put on IWGB shirts for the protest

and marched up to the barriers across the front of the court with their banner, plastic horns and drums

Alberto makes use of the PS system he is carrying to tell everyone why the cleaners are protesting

They are asking to be paid the London Living Wage for their work in keeping Southwark Crown Court clean

But although they work inside the court, they are not employed by the court and are paid only the national minimum wage.

by the contractor, MITIE that the court outsources its cleaning to - but the IWGB say the court should insist that
all contractors pay the Living Wage, as some local authorities and large companies do as a condition of bidding for contracts.

A woman comes out from the court and tries to get the protesters to stop. She says the protest is illegal. They disagree

and the protest continues. There doesn't seem to be a lot happening inside the court on a Friday afternoon - we only see
a handful of people going in to the building.

but the protest is clearly getting noticed. Secuirity staff and police watched from the entrance to the court

as a spokesperson for the cleaners addressed the protest.

In between speeches and chanting the cleaners blew horns and banged drums

They began to walk around in a circle on the pavement outside the court
