Kennett & Avon: Newbury

Woolhampton Lock to Newbury. Thu 2 Jan 2014

We walked the short distance from Midgeham Station which is in Woolhamptonto begin our canal walk

The pub here was the last before we reached Newbury, which showed poor planning

To the side of the canal there was a lot of water

The Kennet & Avon has many swing bridges - and ball bearings were invented to make the swing easier

The only craft we saw moving on the navigation were a few canoes

and the canoes had to be lifted out of the water and carried past the locks

At the end of the portage they were put back into the water

and paddled off

There is a lot of water coming down the Kennet, often much in channels beside the canal, but the main stream
is a few hundred metres south of the navigation between Woolhampton and the other side of Thatcham

In the distance Midgeham church was visible on top of a hill for most of the first section of the walk
