Kennett & Avon: Newbury

Woolhampton Lock to Newbury. Thu 2 Jan 2014

There are pill boxes along the canal at key points, often close to locks or bridges

Gravel workings close to the canal

 More gravel workings

Most of the Kennet flows away from the canal under a footbridge. The main stream is a couple of hundred metres south of here

Just before this point the canal towpath was blocked by fallen trees. We managed to break off a few branches

and clamber over and under several trunks to get past and out on the bank of the river here

and then walk back to the more placid canal

An empty house by the canal

Canalside industry around Thatcham

Water rushing through a weir adjoining the lock

And a large bar to stop boats and flotsam going over the weir
