Newham's Shame - Carpenters Estate Tour

Stratford, London. Sat 21 Jul 2012

There is some industry on the fringes of the estate

Lund Point. Some residents were upset not to have been consulted about the advertising on their blocks

The Carpenters Arms has lost most of its business with local firms being closed down for the Olympic development

BBC security men bar our way into Lund Point - but are told we will be back later

Residents complain about play space being taken up for the BBC emergency power supply - and the thick black
smoke from it that pollutes the adjoining row of small back gardens just out of picture at left

 Olympic entrance on Warton Rd

The Waterworks River, the SW boundary of Carpenters was once lined with industry - now being replaced

by flats for the rich, their value enhanced by the £19m Three Mills Lock. Previously the river was tidal and

during heavy rainfall often carried overflow sewage upstream.

One of the few remaining shops here on Stratford High St

is now a cafe, with the barber who used to occupy it now working in a back room. He holds a framed newspaper article featuring him as the

'Last Man Standing' on the street.

Carpenters has its own primary school

The third point block, where the BBC originally wanted to have their
studios - but their plans were scuppered by a resourceful resident
