Swan Upping

Shepperton to Staines. Monday 18 July 2011

The swans are on private land on the other side of the backwater so we can't get a good view

The uppers come back and go into Penton Hook lock

The Queen's Swan Warden and his colleagues in the 'Royal Swan' usually go ahead of the uppers and spot the swans

A few local residents come ourt with flags to wave at the uppers

One of the large herds of unpaired swans on the Thames

The uppers approach a female swan looking after six cygnets at Staines

The swan and cygnets move out into the river, but two skiffs go past to turn them back

and others come up to begin to surround them

The boats carefully close in, filling the gaps between them
