Swan Upping

Shepperton to Staines. Monday 18 July 2011
 
 The uppers bring their boats to surround the swan and the cygnets

 

 closing the gaps between them, then bringing in the boats to close in on the swans

 

 

 

 

 
 
Finally they are close enough to try and grab the swan and cygnets, though it would be easy to fall in 

 

One of the Royal uppers has come on land and down the steps and grabs the female swan around its neck 

There is a brief struggle 

 

 

 but soon he has her firmly. Swans stop struggling once their feet are held behind them
