Extinction Rebellion had planned to hold their protest on this roundabout,
but police stopped them reaching it
A van had brought the digger to the pub car park on the A4 above the
roundabout
and the cyclists arrive from Hyde Park Corner, led by two police cyclists
They stopped at the lights. Police were blocking their path down to
the roundabout and they had to ride
straight on.
The ride ended on the bridge which takes the A4 over the road into
Heathrow
The roundabout with the plane on it was below them
A tractor arrived to go with the digger shovel
Among the protesters was one of the XR hunger strikers who have been
protesting outside the Party HQs
The sound system had been fitted as a mock bulldozer and had been
cycled to the protest
There were a large number of police and police vehicles, some parked
around the mock aircraft
which is an airline advert.
The banner 'Flight Reductions Not Airport Expansion' was fixed to
the bridge
Christine Taylor, one of the local residents who has been fighting
Heathrow Expansion for over 20 years talks
to some of the cyclists
Her mother and a few other local residents had come to the protest
The shovel was in place in front of the tractor, but we had to wait
while the cyclists had a rest and and some lunch
Her family moved from Bedfont to Harmondsworth many years ago - she
remembers the area before Heathrow
became an airport - it was falsely begun as a military airport in
the closing years of the war so it could become
a civil airport.
Stewards stand along the edge of the nearside lane
and people begin the lie-in
Some try to block both lanes with the XR banner, but police rush in
and push them back
'Reflect/Rebel/Relinquish' is I think the message on the banner
More police rush up and form a line in front of the protesters
while others wave the traffic past
