People sit listening to speeches about the failures of the Family
Courts, which should be protecting children
but often take decisions that split up families and leave children
open to violent and sometimes sexual abuse
Evidence of domestic abuse is still too often ignored or refused to
be taken into account by social services,
charities and the Family Courts.
Children and their mothers suffer in our system, particularly those
who are poor and working class
The protesters call for domestic abuse to be taken more serioiusly
and for women to be given support to keep their children rather than the
first
response being to take children away from loving mothers and grandmothers.
They highlight horrific cases such as that of Ellie Butler, a six year old
murdered by her father in Sutton in 2013. She had been injured by
him in 2007, and on release from hospital was looked after by grandparents.
In 2012
after her father had his conviction for GBH overturned, Dame Mary
Claire Hogg ordered she be returned to her parents. Less than a year later
she was dead
