People lift the plastic dustbin containing the numbered ducks
and tip it
and the ducks come out
and fall down
into Bow Creek
They start in a small circle
but soon spread out
People have come up in canoes and a kayak from Cody Dock to supervise
the race
but the ducks have other ideas and head for the mud along the east
bank
Simon Myers from Cody Dock wades up to the ducks
and starts pushing them out from the side with his paddle
he begins to throw them further from the bank
and eventually picks them up and flings them as far as he can
People watch and tell him to throw their duck harder
and another paddler comes up the creek to help. But after ten minutes
the ducks have moved perhaps 50 yards
and still have around a kilometre to go to the finish where people are waiting
to catch them.
