A week before the second anniversary of the disaster Parliament was
debating Grenfell
Some went inside into the public gallery but a small group stayed
outside to have a visible presence
Campaigners feel that people should have been charged with criminal
offences within a few weeks of the fire, which made the criminal consequences
of their actions clear. One woman wears a pearly jacket calling for
'Council Homes for People Not Profit'. Many Grenfell families have still
not been found
permanent homes despite the promises made by Theresa May and others.
No charges have been made and police say they will not until the public
inquiry ends. There seems to be a determined effort by all concerned
to overload the inquiry with legal documents
rather than try to get at the facts. Independent researchers came
up with the facts and issued a report in a few
weeks, and feel there were grounds for criminal cases, not just the
'corporate manslaughter' charge the police are apparently considering. Even
if anyone
is eventually convicted of that, the court can only impose a fine
on the company, not send those responsible to prison. There will never be
justice for
Grenfell, or perhaps like Hillsborough it will only be after 28 years
of struggle that people are brought to court.
