The Hilton Doubletree Hotel is just off Portman St. The UVW walk into
the foyer
and I follow them
They make a lot of noise
and hotel staff try to stop the protest
but are rather outnumbered
Hotel staff start to push the protesters, though fairly gently
But the walk around them
and make clear they are not prepared to leave without talking to management
about the non-payment of
wages by the cleaning contractor
Court action might eventually get a judgement to reclaim the pay -
but would take a long time and even with
a court judgement people often don't pay up. Direct action is a faster
and more positive way to get results
After stating their case the cleaners play loud music and dance in
the foyer
Petros goes to talk with one of the management and tells him what
they are demanding.
A few police arrive and talk with hotel staff
and try to talk with Petros, who is busy stating the UVW case again,
and saying the police should act to stop
workers being cheated out of their pay. Dalia is owed several thousand
pounds and needs it to live
The dancing continues
Apparently someone from the company that employed Dalia is coming
to talk, but has an hour's journey to get
here. I don't have time to wait, but the UVW will.
Some of the protesters show their placards and banners on the front
steps of the hotel.
