 Tanya Murat of Southwark Defend Council Housing introduced the event and the speakers

 

 

 SOuthwark Greens Against Demolitions

 

 'Homes for Londoners Not Assests for Investors - with a crossed out image of the Strata tower at the Elephant

 

 

 One of those whose work has uncovered and publicised much of the dodgy deals made by Southwark in demolishing
 council estates which could have been refurbished and lasted for another 50 years as council homes.

 

 

 People shout for Southwark to build council homes - not give away the estates for developers profits

 A Labour Party activist opposed to the right-wing Labour councillors who currently run Southwark

 a woman speaks for the Latino community who have made the Elephant a vibrant centre

 which the council nad developers are gentrifying. No place for the community in the proposed development

 

 

 

 Legal action against the plans is being considered, and a woman form the local law centre speaks

 Southwark is getting rid of organisations that repesent residents of council estates and replacing them by fake bodies

 

 

 A union rep for council workers speaks supporting the protest and calling for development for the community

 

 

 A leader of the market traders speaks about the plans and how the council has produced fake figures for current

 rents to argue for the much higher rents it wants to charge for the temporary market, and about how it has failed

 to consult properly and produce viable plans to allow the existing traders to keep in business.

 

 

 

 After the rally security were very cautious about letting the public into the meeting
