The lift bridge replaced an earlier bridge, possibly in 1954. It has
not been raised for several decades and was welded
in the down position around ten years ago. The rail viaduct between
Deptford station and Greenwich is listed.
There was a foot bridge known as the Ha’penny Hatch before the
first railway bridge was built in 1838 and
the railway company had to compensate the owners for any losses from their
tolls. The railway company charged people
crossing a halfpenny to get the payment. The footbridge
made £350 per year - around 170,000 passengers crossing
Tolls were last collected there around 1901.
You can also cross on the DLR
Continuous welded rail makes it impossible for the rail bridge to
lift now
but the footbridge can lift - and has to if lighters are to pass at
high tide
Prior's wharf is still in use by a concrete firm
and the Creek Road bridge has to lift to get vessels like the Bert
Prior through as it can only move at high tide
There is a cabin for the bridge operator. This lifting bridge replaced
an earlier swing bridge in 1954
The flats on the opposite bank of the Creek are on what was once the
South Metropolitan gasworks site with coal wharfs
On the walk we stopped outside Deptford Cinema for a talk
by one of the people who set it up
From there we went to the Old Tidemill Garden, which has
been occupied by locals since August 29th against plans to build on it
The Big Red bus at the Birds nest pub
Inside the Goldsmiths site which houses their MFA studios
and the view through the chain link fence of the creek
Inside the studios an artist shows us her work on the area
and we leave to walk around the site next to the creek
Buildings across the creek include a Holiday Inn
There are moorings onan arm of the creek which I think used to lead
to the Tidemill
This now comes to an end here close to Deptford Church St
Buildings on Creekside have yards leading to the creek
