This was the last full day of our holiday and as the weather looked
fine we decided to climb Crag Fell
After we had crossed the River Ihen we got a good view of the hill
we were heading for - and you can just see the path near the top
and as we began the climb up the hill we could just see Far Moorside
where we were staying
the path went up the hill through a plantation
with occasional glimpses through branches of the valley below
It seemed a long steep climb for us
but not for this dog who came to investigate us
finally we came out of the trees to a view of Ennerdale Water
Work was taking place close to the dam where the river flows out
Far Moorside was still just visible, close to the centre of this picture
as a small white dot
The bulk of Herdus and Great Borne across the lake
and bare rock along the opposite side of Ben Gill
Ben Gill
The path kept going up and up. The river in the trees below is at
around 100m and the summit we were aiming
for is at 520m, so we had around 420m to climb. It doesn't sound a
great deal, though calling it 1400 ft seems
more impressive. Looking back in this picture I could see the sea
a few miles away
Bowness Knott in front of Herdus / Great Borne
Getting near the summit I was having to stop rather more often to
take photographs
From the summit (there are two close together at 523 and 522m) you
can see the view east up the lake
There is a depression and some boggy ground between the two summits
