for gold and for coal are causing extreme
environmental problems in Colombia
as also is a hydropower project.
and indigenous communities are suffering and dying because of the
greed of the mining companies
and UK oil companies.
The Gran Marcha Carnival in cities throughout Colombia today isdemanding
their government respects the rights
of local communities against the interests of mining companies.
The block which houses the Colombian embassy in a flat
residents voted against AngloGold Ashranti's huge La Colosa gold mine
Hundreds of human rights and environmental activists have been assassinated
for their opposition to projects
including the Hydroituango dam, oil extraction in Putamayo which is
causing excessive pollution and logging
which is destroying the Amazon forest . Campaigners paint a large

Last year the population of Buenaventura, a Colombian port continued
a general strike for 3 weeks despite brutal repression
The strike ended when government promised a public hospital, drinkable
water supply and decent education,
but little has been done and the promised $400m fund for the work
has not yet been set up
I had to leave while the protest was still growing as people arrived
after finishing work.
