residents voted against AngloGold Ashranti's huge La Colosa gold mine
Hundreds of human rights and environmental activists have been assassinated
for their opposition to projects
including the Hydroituango dam, oil extraction in Putamayo which is
causing excessive pollution and logging

Last year the population of Buenaventura, a Colombian port continued
a general strike for 3 weeks despite brutal repression
The strike ended when government promised a public hospital, drinkable
water supply and decent education,
but little has been done and the promised $400m fund for the work
has not yet been set up
I had to leave while the protest was still growing as people arrived
after finishing work.
