The Peachey Tomb with the first of the two verses of Byron's 1807
'Lines Written beneath an Elm in the Churchyard of Harrow'
placed here by the son of a friend and fellow Harrow pupil of Byron
in 1905.
The view, with a few more buildings than in Byron's time
The tomb had to be surrounded by a cage because it became a place
of pilgrimage for lovers of Byron after
his death - presumably because it was rather more convenient than
his grave in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire.
Visitors began to chip bits off from the stone and the cage was needed
to protect it. The last burial in the
Peachey family tomb was in 1831, seven years after Byron's death.
