The path leaves the right of way by this barn and takes a slightly
more direct route to the Great North Rd
which can just be seen therough the trees in this picture made in
a short stretch between the old road and the
A1(M) - the bridge for which appears in this picture taken from a
few feet to the left.
To go between the two bridges you have to climb up and down a steep
bank, I took the hard way, pulling myself
up by some saplings, then found the remains of some steps to point out to
those behind me, then climbed down
some more decaying and very slippery muddy steps to river level and a
path under the bridge which at the far end
was under around six inches of water. After making the walk I looked up
the Lea Valley Walk on the web and find
it now suggests a different route to our guide books. But though I got wet
feet as it overtopped my low cut boots
I was still pleased we came this way and walked beside the northern
lake of Stanborough Park
between the lake and the River Lea rather than a rather boring stretch
of road
There were swans and dragons on the lake
and a car park with tall and very regularly planted trees
and one that made me think back a few days to CND's rally at Aldermaston...
approaching the road were some rather curious bits of water with bridges
and another bridge under the A6129, where the path was just above
the river level
leading to a path between the river and the south lake - which is
a fishing lake
and where I saw a butterfy
a path from the park goes under the railway - the busy East Coast
mainline
where I think 'swag' had painted this
and on to Woodhall farm, where a long lane led to the main road at Mill
Green. We walked along this a little way
before deciding to wait at a bus stop for the bus to St Albans.
