Shut Down Yarl's Wood
Yarl's Wood, Bedford, UK. Sat 24 Mar 2018
Women inside waved what they had - including bras - and protesters
waved back
others hold posters and placards and shouted
A former detainee who was well-known inside speaks
'Its about Freedom to move, to live, to love, to work....'
Along the fence there was more shouting and kicking the fence, and
several more smoke flares
and then many of the protesters there came to kick the fence
'Solidarity with Yarlswood Hunger Strike' The strikers called it off
two days earlier after a month of action but are
still determined to keep on fighting. Keeping on refusing food could
have had serious long-term health effects
especially as those inside do not have proper access to medical care
- one of many of their demands.
Hunger striking isn't easy, though the former detainees say the food
is always poor, sometimes impossible to eat
'Release Torture Victimes - Shame'. Taking photographs of the windows
is tricky - they are far away and the mesh
gets in the way and also makes focussing difficult. A little processing
makes the images clearer
And the first floor windows are partly blocked by the bottom half
of the fence
Protesters climbe the ladder to fix flowers and messages to the fence
- and a bra.
At the microphone more former detaineesfrom MfJ were speaking.
'Freedom' , 'No Human Is Illegal', 'No Border, No Nation, No Deportation;
And a former detainee stands on the ladder looking at the detainees
imprisoned as he speaks
A speaker from the Revolutionary Communist Group supports the protest
and the detainees
Another MFJ former detainee speaks
It's time for me to go and catch the coach back to Bedford station. As I
walk along the footpath back to the road
I can still hear the protest continuing.
