Guantanamo Vigil Marks 16 years

US Embassy, Grosvenor Sq, London. Thu 11 Jan 2018

 


 The US eagle is still on the rooftop but the flag has gone - perhaps to be moved to the new Embassy in Nine Elms

 Armed police ask the protesters to keep a short distance from the railings - and they agree

 lighting the candles to spell out GITMO proves something of a challenge, though there is only a light wind

 they still blow out. And some which have been used before don't burn well until they get hot enough to pour out some wax

 

 

 

 

 

 Eventually the display is more or less complete
     
 

 but still needs attention as some go out...

 

 

 More people are arriving and pick up candles and pictures of the 41 detainees

 

 

 

 and slowly join the others standing in line by the fence

 One protester has brought the clown mask from last year's 'Guantanamo is no laughing matter' vigil

 but is looking for a pen to alter the 15 years to read 16
