Shut Down Yarls Wood 12

Yarl's Wood, Bedford. Sat 18 Nov 2017

A woman who was released only a few days earlier returns to speak, thanking MfJ and greeting her friends still inside

'These People need Protection not Detention'

Many Movement for Justice supporters are former detainees

'China' , 'China', 'Release Us', 'We Need Freedom' , '5 Months In No End In Sight' , 'Release'

None of these people should be locked up. There is no good reason to lock any of them up. Some need help

and protection. All need to be treated as human beings, not pawns in a numbers game to satisfy the racist right.

Karen speaks, and she is ringing up people inside and getting them to speak to us

 and to wave to us

and people wave back. It gets hard to take pictures because so many are waving and holding up placards

'Detention is Violence' and cost-cutting private companies employing badly paid and largely untrained staff make it worse

Many reports have shown ill-treatment, bullying, harassment, assaults, sexual assaults taking place in these prisons

food is poor and often unsuitable, people have to work for £1 an hour. The only answer is to shut them down and

free the detainees. This man (whose name I didn't catch) was held in three different detention centres

A Palestinian man who was held in detention wears a Palestinian flag

'Women of Yarl's Wood You Are Powerful And Strong Fighters - Together We WIll Win'

Isatou, another recently released detainee speaks. Like the others she praises MfJ for their work and giving her hope.

Karen listens as a phone call from a woman inside is heard over the loudspeakers

The light was falling and the protest would end shortly. I was getting cold and decided I had to leave, and pushed my bike back to the road for the journey back to Bedford station. Fortunately apart from one short steep hill it was mainly downhill.
