Campaigners arrive at Oxford Circus and get out banners
Then wlaqk into the road and block the entrances to the junction
The banner makes clear what they are protesting about
and a smaller one tells people it will be a brief protest and asks
them to switch off their engines
The banner across Regent St
They were handing out leaflets which gave some details about the almost
10,000 early deaths each year
in London because of pollution, mainly from traffic
and there was a speech for those close enough to hear
At the end of the five minute protest they left the road
and walked along the pavement to Piccadilly Circuse
The action here needed some planning, with traffic from several directions
and the protesters split into groups to block several roads
waiting at the traffic lights until the traffic stopped
and then walking onto the road to hold up banners
Soon all the traffic was stopped
and again there was a speech explaining why as well as the banners
and leaflets
One of the protesters was pushed over by a pedestrian and others help
her up
As the protesters were leaving the road, one was attacked by a cyclist
whose sweater had the word 'MONEY' written large across it - and posed
as I photographed him
The protesters tell him the health of Londoners is important and we should
all be protesting
