Palestininain prisoners in Israeli jails are on hunger strike because
Israel is refusing their rights under the Geneva
conventions over twice-monthly family visits and other issues - and
the International Committee of the Red Cross
the ICRC, is failing to stand up for these rights. Israel give as
their reasons 'budget restrictions' but have refused
Palestinian offers to pay the costs involved. As the hunger strike
reaches its 40th day, Israel have destroyed the
personal belongings of some hunger strikers and have moved over 100
who are critically ill to a camp in the
Negev desert and set up military field hospitals to force feed them
- which the World Medical Association say is
'tantamount to torture'. The protesters draw the outline of one of
the underground cells in which Palestinian children
are held for many days in solitary confinement - and add a soft toy.
A number of those passing read the display and
signed the petition, though there were relatively few as the British
Red Cross building is in a back street next to Moorgate.
