Samuel Plimsoll and the Plimsoll line
Henry Bartle Frere, a controversal colonial administrator who deliberately
started the Zulu War and the first Boer War. And Gladstone blamed him for
the war in Afghanistan. Who knows why he got a statue? Blame the Prince
of Wales.
General James Outram was the hero of the Indian Mutiny. There is also
a statue of him on horseback in Kolkata (Calcutta) where his role in the
Great Uprising is probably remembered less favourably. It was moved to the
Victoria Memorial in 1958 and replaced by a statue of Ghandi.
Outram's
equestrian statue was copied (badly) by Indian sculptor Marathi Nagesh
Yoglekar for his statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a great Inidan nationalist
who tried to enlist the help of Hitler to free India from the British yoke.
From Germany he went to Japan and set up with their help the Indian National
Army and the Provisional Government of Free India. When the INA and Japanese
army were defeated he decided to seek help from Russia, but died of burns
following a plane crash in Formosa (Taiwan) on his way to Manchuria.
