Thames Path - Bermondsey

Bermondsey, London. Sun 28 Aug 2016

A man was sitting playing a harmonica when I got to the river - but got up as I arrived because it started to rain

The path goes back to the river at the east of Chambers Wharf - now a large building site for the Thames Tideway super-sewer

This was a convenient place to shelter from the heavy shower

and to photograph before the rain had stopped entirely

Work on the super-sewer will take around six years

'We want homes - not a giant shithole' is presumably a comment on the redevelopment of Chambers Wharf

 Looking downriver

Upriver - and people get ready for a picnic on the beach

Cherry Garden Pier

There are steps down to the shore here

The sculpture here, 'Dr Salter's Daydream' was first created for the LDDC by Diane Gorvin in 1991 and was iby Cherry Garden Pier
It was moved here in 2003, but Dr Salter - then sitting on a metal bench - was stolen for scrap value in 2011.
A local fundrasiing campaign enabled the scuplture to be replaced, with the additional figure of Ada Salter (there work also
includes a cat on the river wall, not shown in these pictures. Dr Salter now sits on a large granite slab, to which he is
presumably firmly attached to make theft more difficult.
