Democracy Camp starts with rally

Parliament Square, London. Fri 17 Oct 2014

Police liasion officers were handing out an 'Important Notice' - basically telling protesters that democracy was

stuffed so long as Parliament Square was concerned - by Act of Parliament. And there are Westminster Council

bylaws that make breathing an offence. Almost.

Strangely the largely healthy grass was in need of repair. Urgently today. Though they hadn't done anything about the bit that really needed attention for weeks. There was an area that should have been re-seeded after a previously allowed event, but hadn't been touched.

Quite a few people had brought bags - and when asked said they intended to sleep elsewhere in London

But a Heritage Warden wasn't satisfied and asked the police to take them away

Police argued with protesters, though possibly the media presence stopped them stealing the bags

Arguments between protesters and police continued

But eventually I think the police gave up. Some protesters moved their bags to other parts of the square

The 'Real Democracy Now' banner is rather long to photograph easily
