A redundant stile in Mam Plantation View towards Winats pass Castleton and Hope cement factory in rapidly changing light Coffins used to be carried down the old road from Edale to the church in Castleton for burial from 1300-1634 when Edale got its own church The road is known as the Corpse Raod this area was known as the Liggate, probably a corruption of Anglo -Saxon ‘lic’, or Old Norse ‘lyk’ meaning ' body' and the Scandanavian 'gate' meaning road or way. Or it could simply be from the Angls-Saxon ‘Hlidgeat’, for a swinging gate, often at the edge of cultivated lands. Hope cement factory from Hollowford Rd |
