Coffins used to be carried down the old road from Edale to the church in Castleton for burial from 1300-1634 when Edale got its own church

The road is known as the Corpse Raod this area was known as the Liggate, probably a corruption of Anglo
-Saxon ‘lic’, or Old Norse ‘lyk’ meaning ' body' and the Scandanavian 'gate' meaning road or way. Or it could
simply be from the Angls-Saxon ‘Hlidgeat’, for a swinging gate, often at the edge of cultivated lands.
