Staines Walk In The Snow

Staines, Middlesex.Sunday 5 Feb 2012

The Swan Hotel is opposite Staines on the far bank of the Thames

The Old Town Hall, given away by the council to become a pub, one of few good nineteenth century buildins in Staines (they also gave away another, the former Staines West Station, now offices.)
The replica of the London Stone (the original is in a museum room at the back of Staines Library) next to the County Ditch where it runs into the Thames marked the limit of the City of London's jurisdiction over the Thames.

The Lammas, a park next to the Thames and the County Ditch was given to Staines as a gesture to try and appease the people following battles over many years over the enclosures of common land, which still rankled many years after the event.

The old wall around the Parish Church, probably the oldest part of Staines, a small gravelly mound probably a religious site in pre-Christian times.

Church Street has some of the older remaining buildings in Staines

The Wyradisbury (or Wraysbury) River, one of the streams of the Colne, runs between a housing development and a shopping centre

The aqueduct which takes water from the River Thames at Wraysbury to the Staines Reservoirs

Commoners have grazing rights on the Moor. Many of the animals have been taken off because of the weather

The River Colne on Staines Moor - and pylons. Usually you can see (and hear) planes taking off from Heathrow.

In wet weather parts of the moor are flooded or boggy and you need to keep to the slightly raise paths.
But no problems today
