Students Protest Fees & Cuts

Malet St to Whitehall, London. Wed 24 Nov

The march went smoothly until we reached Aldwych, when the students broke into a run.

Police formed a line on Aldwych south side, and blocked their path. Clare Solomon and the other organisers

argued for the march to be let through, but eventually people at the back got fed up and went down to

Temple Gardens and continued the march along the Embankment, returning to the Strand further on

and making their way to Trafalgar Square as planned. It wasn't at all clear what point the police had been

trying to make, but it certainly alienated the students. Perhaps the police were simply trying to show that they

were in charge - if so it was rather a failure, and it was the first real indication that there would be problems later.

Eventually the march reached Trafalgar Square and made its way down Whitehall

Only to find that police had blocked the entry into Parliament Square. Until then the mood had been one of Carnival

but now, people didn't know what to do as the march could not continue

and things began to get a little nasty
