CUMBRIAN INTERLUDE: Cumbrian Coast

Silloth, Cumbria. August 2010

Marshall Dock is still in use by small boats

and a channel along its centre leads to the gates of New Dock

A 1000 ft jetty here used to be served by passenger steamers going to Dumfries, Liverpool, Dublin, Belfast,
the Isle of Man and even London and was kept as a pier after passenger services ended in 1917.
It began breaking up in the 1940s and the short remaining length was demolished in 1973.

Walking along the West Beach at Silloth

The sand stretches for miles along the coast at low tide

and a long way out to sea - which is why Silloth needed a 100 ft pier for the passenger boats
