Brentford

Brentford, London. 8 August 2010

Even with a 16mm lens I couldn't really show the whole scene, and I took some pictures to be stitched as panoramas

The public footbath goes on a bridge across this dock, which is a tidal creek of the River Thames

Stet Capitolium Fulgens (the Capitol stands gleaming) under the flaming tree at top left is a quote from Horace's The Path of the Just. The Brentford Gas Company was founded by Sir Felix Booth in 1820 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1821. In 1926 it expanded by taking over the site of the Royal Brewery and was taken over by the Gas Light and Coke Co (the world's first gas company, founded in 1812) and on nationalization in 1949 passed to the North Thames Gas Board. Brentford HIgh Street ran through the centre of the expanded site.
