Swan Upping

Staines, Middlesex. Monday 19 July 2010

The male swan is carefuly carried to the Swan Warden's boat and may go to the swan sanctuary

The female swims towards the cygnets, hissing angrily

and they are released into the water

Later the Swan Warden and his helpers try to catch a fifth cygnet from the family, missing earlier

A few days previously there had been seven cygnets

cygnets are not easy to catch even when you entice them with bread

Eventually they caught the cygnet just off the old swimming area at the Lammas,
but I could not follow them there as it was closed to the public for a group photograph.
