The Thames Path - Marlow to Henley

Saturday 26 July, 2008

Stream at Hurley

Hurley Church was the nave of the Norman Priory  - although it was built on the site of a Saxon church. Other abbey buildings remain, now mainly private houses.
Inside is the 17C memorial to the Lovelaces - father and son - of Ladye Place, built on the ruins of St Mary's Priory and destroyed in 1837. Both were called Richard. The son (at right) sailed with Drake and was made Lord Lovelace of Hurley in 1627. John, the 3rd Lord Lovelace plotted with others in the crypt at Ladye place to bring about the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688.

Old cottages in the High St, Hurley

The Olde Bell was originally built in 1135 as the guesthouse of the Priory, with a bell for new arrivals to ring..

An old cottage back on the Thames Path

Approaching Culham Court the path leads away from the river

And past the landscaped area around the large house there

The Thames path isn't high enough to see the famous views of the river although there are a few glimpses

And a fine flower-filled grass meadow
