At Hambledon Lock you can walk across the river, but the Thames Path stays on the south bank. |

Greenlands was built in 1810 but extended in 1871 for W H Smith, the founder of the stationery chain, who became a loyal Tory MP and was rewarded for his party loyalty by being made First Lord of the Admiralty in 1877. Gilbert and Sullivan satirised him in 'HMS Pinafore' as the "ruler of the Queen's Navy" who had never seen a ship. |
