Swan Upping - River Thames

Laleham to Windsor, Monday 16 July 2007

One of the royal boats approaches swans at Laleham Burway

Swans at Penton Hook Island as the uppers approach

And surround them - the press boat is well back at top right of picture

I was too close to the action, and water splashed onto my lenses as the swans struggled.

The Queen's Swan Marker may lose his title if the Queen loses her swans.

The swan's feather comes from the first swan the uppers claim

The Queen's Swan Warden returns a swan after checking its ring.

Eric acts as a spotter ahead of the uppers, and lures them to a convenient part of the bank

This small swan family at Staines is surrounded

And an upper reaches out to grab the neck of the adult

and pulls the bird towards the boat
