Swan Upping - River Thames

Laleham to Windsor, Monday 16 July 2007

When all the family are caught, they are brought onto the bank

The cygnets are weighed and measured and all the birds are give a quick health check.

The cords are used to tie the swan's feet behind their back - after which they normally stop struggling and relax.

A small flotilla of boats accompanies the uppers - and sometimes gives their boats a tow.

I went ahead of the boats and found these swans at Runnymede, keeping them occupied with some crusts.

Soon the uppers came along and started their work, trying to let the ducks and geese escape.

though a few were also trapped
