Iona: the Village (Baile Mór)

August 9-15, 2008

The Bishop's House was built in 1894 and houses St Columba's chapel, the Episcopal Church on Iona as well as accomodation for over 20 guests

The Iona Parish Church (Church of Scotland) was built to a standard design made by  Thomas Telford in 1826,
modified to omit one wing of the building.
The manse next door is now the Iona Heritage Centre and Tea Room

The Iona Nunnery was left in ruins when the Abbey was restored, possibly becasue there was less remaining

St Ronan Church in the Nunnery grounds at left of picture is used as a store for masonery

It is closer to the center of the village than the Abbey, and nuns were probably more involved with village life

Post offices are becoming rare now, but Iona still has one. It isn't the building at left above, but the pale blue former fishing shed opposite

This is the post office with its vintage post box

A post office van no comes to Iona and the bike is rusty and covered with cobwebs

The main village street seen from the sea - the post box visible at extreme left

And the view on the street itself

MacLean's Cross - one of few left standing from the hundreds that once dotted the island.
