Swan Upping

River Thames, Staines to Windsor. Monday 14 July, 2008

Once their feet are held firmly the swans stop struggling - and the strings uppers have on their betls are to keep the feet tied

The swans are handled very carefully

along with the cygnets

they are lined up on the bank for inspection

and minor health problems are dealt with

The cygnets are ringed and recorded. Both of the adult swans here were already ringed, and their numbers are also taken - but any unringed adults found are also ringed.

The cygnets are also weighed and their heads are measured, with careful records being made
The swans are also assigned to the Queen, Dyers or Vintners, although this is only a formality now. The annual upping gives useful information about the state of the river and the birds, and also has an educational purpose, both informally as here and also involves schools along the river.
